Aire-sur-la-Lys to Bethune

Wednesday 11 May 2016

After a leisurely meander around Aire-sur-la-Lys,

Centre ville

Moulin des Invalades - built in 1682 on the order of the King by soldiers whose injuries were so bad that they were unfit for service

provisioning up with cheeses and ham from a boulangerie, avoiding the Chevaline (a shop specialising in horse meat) and taking a quick coffee and croissant at a corner café,

The 16thC building the tourist office, originally the seat of the court bailiffs.

Gothic arches of the church of St Pierre

Anyone for pony?

Provisions.

it’s off on the 21 kilometre ride to Bethune where we moor up at a new pontoon with a nearby electricity and water supply which, to activate, you need a ‘key’ from the VNF offices. Not needing either we decide not to bother with the key and take a ride into town primarily to get Lynn sorted out with an Orange data and phone card so that we can hopefully, finally connect to the internet using the powerful iBoost antenna system, a gift from Lynn’s brother Ian and his wife, Sian. A reliable internet connection is becoming the bane of my life as I cannot upload the blog until one can be established.

Bethune belfry.
The main square.

Not being in the mood for sightseeing, we are soon back aboard, chatting to Ian and Sian on Skype and generally just enjoying the fine weather and fiddling around with things on the ‘to-do’ list.
